PARIS (Reuters) – Australian redhead Mollie O'Callaghan shocked teammate and defending champion Ariarne Titmus to win gold in the women's 200 metres freestyle at the Paris Olympics on Monday.
O'Callaghan clocked an Olympic record 1:53.27 at La Defense Arena, 0.54 seconds ahead of Titmus, while Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey took bronze.
Just weeks after Titmus took the world record at the Olympic trials, O'Callaghan turned the tables on her clubmate with a blistering final lap.
He also thwarted Titmus' attempt to become the first swimmer to successfully defend Olympic gold in the 200-meter freestyle.
