According to multiple reports, the New York Yankees are interested in a possible trade for St. Louis Cardinals utility player Tommy Edman.
Despite trading for Jazz Chisholm before the deadline, it appears the Yankees still want to bolster their infield.
The Yankees' interest in Edman was first reported by Katie Woo of The Athletic.
Edman, 29, would fill the backup role the Yankees need in the infield, while providing an elite glove and high-contact bat.
Edman won the 2022 Gold Glove with the Cardinals and was one of the best defenders in the MLB.
While Edman has already tied the record with 13 career home runs, he is much more known for his high-contact ability. His whiff rate is in the 93rd percentile while his strikeout rate is in the 86th percentile.
He also offers some value on defense, with 27 stolen bases on 31 attempts this season.
Edman has spent most of the season batting either as a leadoff hitter (192 plate appearances) or as a ninth-place hitter (196 plate appearances). His .277 OBP from the leadoff spot leaves much to be desired, but he has a .323 OBP from the ninth hole.
The Yankees may need some quality infielders, especially if it means bolstering the defense.
Edman will be under team control through the 2025 season after signing a two-year deal with the Cardinals this offseason.
